Local Insolvency Practitioner Warns Bramhall Businesses Are “On Edge” as Car Park Closure Looms

Parker Walsh, a Bramhall-based firm of licensed insolvency practitioners, has raised concerns that the planned closure of a key village car park could have disastrous consequences for local businesses already operating on a knife edge.

The warning follows fears from independent traders in Bramhall shopping precinct, who say the year-long shutdown – required for the construction of a large underground sewage storage tank – may push some firms to the brink.

Kath Clarke, 84, who helps run the long-standing Plumcake Café, said the impact could be fatal for the business:

“If they shut the car park for 12 months, then we’ll probably close, which is heartbreaking. Many of our customers are elderly and simply can’t walk long distances.”

Other retailers share the same anxiety.

Meena Sheth, owner of Greetings gift shop for 17 years, said she expects footfall to halve, adding:

“It’s obviously a worry to think about what the next year will look like.”

United Utilities has emphasised the environmental importance of the project – part of an £80m investment to reduce sewage spills into local waterways – and stated that other car parks are available nearby. However, traders believe this does little to address the reality for older customers or those who rely heavily on passing trade.

Long-standing village retailer Jim Hall, who has operated in Bramhall since 1978, said:

“The village is already struggling to a degree, and closing the precinct car park is a dreadful move.”

Parker Walsh: “Businesses Are Already Under Pressure”

Molly Monks of Parker Walsh commented:

“We speak with local business owners frequently, and many are already on edge due to reduced footfall, rising costs and changes in consumer behaviour. Removing vital parking for an entire year could accelerate closures, particularly for small independent shops that rely on convenience and repeat local custom.”
